Professional Laminate Flooring Installation
Laminate flooring installation is the professional process of preparing a subfloor and installing durable, wood-look flooring with precise cuts, proper expansion gaps, and secure transitions for a clean, stable finish.
The Challenge
A client at Volga Dance Academy for Youth in Embry Hills, GA, contacted Handyman Expert to replace approximately 200 square feet of commercial loop carpet in two children’s changing rooms. The carpet was firmly bonded to the floor and required careful removal, while wooden benches had to be temporarily disassembled and moved out of the work area. The existing floor also needed preparation and leveling before the new laminate could be installed. Because the rooms are used by children, the finished floor needed to be durable, easy to maintain, and free of exposed gaps or trip hazards.
The Process
We first removed the wooden benches and carefully stripped the existing glued-down carpet from both rooms. Because the carpet adhesive was strongly bonded, additional time and effort were required to remove it without damaging the floor underneath. After cleaning and preparing the substrate, we installed the new laminate flooring with accurate cuts around the room perimeter and door openings.
The existing baseboards were left in place, so the laminate was carefully fitted underneath them and finished with quarter-round molding to cover the remaining expansion gaps. We sealed and painted nail holes and visible joints for a clean finished appearance, then installed metal transition strips where the laminate met the hallway flooring. Finally, the benches were reinstalled and the entire work area was cleaned and inspected.
The Result
The two changing rooms received a clean, updated laminate floor with properly finished edges and transitions. The completed installation improved the appearance of the rooms while providing a practical flooring surface for daily use, and the client was very pleased with the result and left a positive review.

Choosing the Right Flooring for a Changing Room
Consider Moisture Before Choosing Laminate
Laminate can be a good flooring option for many rooms, but areas used by children are more likely to experience spills and wet shoes. For changing rooms, playrooms, and similar spaces, LVP flooring is often a better long-term choice because it provides greater moisture resistance.
Prepare the Subfloor Before Installation
A new floor cannot compensate for a poorly prepared surface. Carpet adhesive, debris, uneven areas, and damaged sections should be addressed before laminate installation to reduce movement, noise, and premature wear.
Plan the Door and Baseboard Details
Door casings and existing baseboards can make a major difference in the final appearance. Cutting the door jambs correctly allows the flooring to slide underneath for a cleaner finish than simply cutting the laminate around the casing.
Choose Transitions Before the Flooring Goes Down
Where new flooring meets another surface, the transition should be planned before installation. The correct transition strip helps cover the expansion gap, create a clean visual break, and reduce the risk of a raised or uneven edge.
Match the Molding to the Flooring
Quarter-round or shoe molding is useful when existing baseboards remain in place. Choosing a complementary color and installing it consistently around the room creates a finished appearance while allowing the required expansion space.
Frequently Asked Questions About Laminate Flooring Installation
Is laminate flooring a good choice for children’s changing rooms?
Laminate can work well in changing rooms when moisture exposure is limited and the floor is properly installed. However, LVP is generally a better choice for areas where spills or frequent moisture are expected.
Can laminate flooring be installed without removing the baseboards?
Yes. Existing baseboards can remain in place if the laminate is carefully fitted underneath and the required expansion gap is covered with quarter-round or shoe molding.
Does glued-down carpet need special preparation before laminate installation?
Usually, yes. Carpet adhesive can leave an uneven or contaminated surface, so the subfloor should be cleaned, scraped, and leveled as necessary before installing the new flooring.
Should door jambs be cut when installing laminate flooring?
Yes. Undercutting the door jamb allows the laminate to slide underneath, creating a much cleaner and more professional transition than cutting the flooring around the jamb.
Do I need transition strips between laminate and another floor?
In most situations, a transition is recommended where two different flooring systems meet. The correct transition helps accommodate movement, cover the required gap, and provide a safer finished edge.
How long does laminate flooring installation take?
The timeline depends on the room layout, flooring condition, preparation requirements, and amount of furniture or equipment that must be moved. Smaller projects can often be completed in one or two days when the subfloor is ready.
Why Professional Laminate Flooring Installation Matters
A laminate floor can look simple to install, but the quality of the finished result depends heavily on subfloor preparation, expansion gaps, accurate cuts, door-jamb clearance, and properly finished transitions.
At Handyman Expert, we handle the complete installation process rather than simply laying flooring over an existing problem. For professional laminate flooring installation in Embry Hills, GA and the Atlanta area, contact Handyman Expert for a project assessment and estimate.
